At 2335m Arequipa was our "halfway" high-altitude destination and we just began to feel the effects of altitude.
The Plaza de Armas is dominated by the cathedral with its unusually widely spaced towers. Our tour of the city should have let us see the volcanoes which surround it, but mist and rain were all we saw.
The Monasterio de Santa Catalina was fascinating, both for the stories of the rich lifestyle of the nuns who used to live there, and for the complex city-in-a-city of alleyways, many coloured a beautiful rich red.
Finally as we drove out of the city to the airport patches of the sky cleared enough for the briefest of glimpses of El Misti, the closest volcano.
