Soon after leaving Cuzco we stopped at the church of San Pedro Apóstol de Andahuaylillas - a beautiful church, but no photography allowed. The for the first half of the trip we drove steadily higher, finally crossing the mountain pass at Abra La Raya at an elevation of 4335m (14,222ft), the highest point of the trip.
After the pass we only descended a little and the land widened out into an area of altiplano (a high altitude plain with distant mountains), which continued until Puno where it merged with Lake Titicaca.
Along the way were several ponds or small lakes with a variety of wildlife. We stopped at one that was particularly rich in waterfowl and had about a dozen flamingoes.
